Great news!

A superb pro-gun bill has passed the Oklahoma State Senate by the overwhelming (and veto-proof) margin of 39-3.

The bill is SB 1685, introduced by Sen. Randy Brogdon (R-34) — who is being supported by GOA’s Political Victory Fund in his bid for governor.

SB 1685 is known as the Firearms Freedom Act, and it is modeled after similar legislation which has been successful in other states, such as MT, SD, TN, UT, and WY.

The Firearms Freedom Act has a simple concept.  It states that if a gun was made in Oklahoma, and then stays in Oklahoma, then the federal government may not regulate it under the Interstate Commerce Cause.  (Because, you see, the gun was never part of any interstate commerce.)

This is important because the Commerce Clause is the “hook” that Congress has used to justify almost every single federal gun control law.  But with the passage of SB 1685, a stand will be taken by the Sooner State that guns stamped with the words Made in Oklahoma” are no business of the federal government.

Since the Senate acted so decisively, anti-gun forces must concentrate their efforts in the House if they want to stop this firm assertion of state and individual rights.

And that’s where you can help.

ACTION: Please urge your State Representative to support SB 1685 wholeheartedly.

If you know who your Rep. is, at http://www.okhouse.gov/Members/MemberListing.aspx you will find his or her e-mail address.

If you don’t know who your State Representative is, please go to http://www.gunowners.org/activism.htm and enter your zip code in the highlighted box.  Then, scroll down to “Governor and State Legislators” and click on the name under “House of Representatives.”  This will give you a Contact tab.  (We’re sorry if that sounds convoluted, it’s not really, but the look-up system on the Oklahoma state website is much more confusing.)

Regardless, a pre-written letter is provided below so that you can copy-and-paste it into the e-mail you send your Representative.  Or please feel free to type your own text, as long as the message is clear.

Dear Representative:

Please wholeheartedly support SB 1685, the Oklahoma Firearms Freedom Act.  This bill states that if a gun is manufactured in the state — and the firearm stays in the state — it is exempt from federal gun control laws.  SB 1685 is modeled after the laws that were recently passed in Montana, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, and Wyoming.

This is one of the most important bills that you will vote on in 2010.  This is more than just a Tenth Amendment resolution — it is a bill that has teeth!

It’s time that we send a message to the U.S. Congress and tell them to start legislating within the authority given them by the Constitution.  Please help continue the nationwide movement that began in Montana by working to pass SB 1685.
