GOP lawmakers tout state ‘opt-out’ health bill

The Tulsa World Reports;

OKLAHOMA CITY — Three Republican lawmakers are promoting legislation that would allow Oklahomans to opt out of a federal health-care reform plan.

The proposed state question has some lawmakers on the other side of the aisle balking.

Reps. Mike Ritze of Broken Arrow and Mike Reynolds of Oklahoma City and Sen. Randy Brogdon of Owasso are backing the Freedom of Healthcare Choice Act.

The measure, House Joint Resolution 1054, would change the state constitution and allow voters to preserve the existing health-care system and opt out of proposed federal health-care reform proposal pending in Congress.

“A law or rule shall not compel, directly or indirectly, any person, employer or health care provider to participate in any heath care system,” the measure states.

Brogdon said: “The proposed legislation in Washington is a massive overstepping of the bounds placed on Congress by our U.S. Constitution. It is time that we the people tell Congress enough is enough — and now Oklahomans will have the opportunity to do so.”

Other states are considering similar measures, Ritze said.

“We don’t feel like the federal government has any jurisdiction in health care,” he said.

The federal proposal is trying to limit the free market, said Brogdon, who is running for governor.

  2. selfish and moronic teabaggers will be the end of America

  3. you are required to buy car insurance in order to drive terry.

    • The car insurance analogy is bogus. Are you going to mandate that non-car owner purchase car insurance? “NO”
      So now we are required to have health care insurance just to live?
      What part of freedom do you not understand?

  4. This bill should have never passed. Who does the goverment think they are. We the people, need to boot them out. The goverment has NO right to tell me what health care I should have, when to use it, or how much I’m going to pay. That is my choice….
