Camera check for insurance is bad idea

Using cameras to check insurance verification on vehicles is not a good idea.

It may be well-meaning, it may bring in new and needed state revenue, and it could be fairly effective, but broadening the use of cameras in public places decreases citizen privacy.

Oklahoma officials recently said they were looking at locating cameras, perhaps 200 of them, along highways that would scan car tag bar codes then run a computer check on the tags against the state’s insurance verification system.

The owners of any vehicles found not to be carrying liability insurance would then receive a notice of a fine in the mail. State officials have solicited information from private companies about operating such a system, and the Legislature could discuss next year the possibility of implementing it.
